Common Name: Bajiri

Scientific Name: Echinicholoa glabrescens


Family: Poaceae


Life Cycle: Annual

Morphological Characters:

Stem- Stout, erect or decumbent, often branching from base

Roots- Fibrous root system

Leaves- Linear with a broad round base narrowing at the tip, glabrous leaf sheath

Inflorescence- A panicle usually with narrow spikes, the seed head is wind-mill shaped and the seeds are without awns

Propagation: By seeds

Agriculture Importance:

The mature plant grows higher than rice. So that it competes for sunlight, Studies show that a single Bajiri grass per square meter can cause about 50% yield loss.

Control Measures:

Hand weeding during the early days of growth.

a.       Removing the weeds before they flowering
b.      Deep flooding (submerging the whole plant)
c.       Crop rotation
